My Contribution: The Benefits of Open-Ended Art
In my section of the book, I focus on the benefits of open-ended art, a subject that is close to my heart. As a mixed media artist with over 25 years of experience, I’ve navigated many creative blocks and learned firsthand how powerful open-ended art can be.
What do I mean by "open-ended art"? It’s the practice of creating without a rigid plan or set of expectations, allowing the process to guide you. In my own art practice, open-ended projects have allowed me to release perfectionism and embrace the journey of creation, which often leads to unexpected breakthroughs.
Here’s why I believe open-ended art is essential:
It Relieves Pressure: When you let go of expectations, you give yourself permission to explore without fear of making mistakes. This opens up creative pathways that might otherwise be blocked by self-doubt.
It Reduces Stress: Engaging in open-ended art can be incredibly calming. Without the pressure to produce a specific result, the act of creating becomes a form of meditation, lowering cortisol levels and promoting a sense of peace.
It Encourages Innovation: With open-ended art, there are no boundaries. You might start with one idea and end up somewhere completely different—something that wouldn’t have been possible if you’d been focused on a specific outcome from the beginning. This is where true innovation happens.
It Connects You with Your Inner Voice: By allowing yourself to play and experiment without judgment, you reconnect with your intuition. This is where the magic of creativity lies.
In my chapter, I provide tips and exercises for anyone looking to incorporate open-ended art into their own creative practice. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, I hope my insights will encourage you to explore new techniques, release creative blocks, and reconnect with the joy of making art.
